Find the Common Denominator
If you love dogs, you’re like many of us who feel we can’t live without them. That’s not surprising, considering dogs have been companions to humans for the past 30,000 years. Scientists believe this very special relationship started when packs of ancient wolves began hanging around human encampments looking for scraps of meat. Obliging humans decided to share some of the kill with these wolves, unwittingly teaching them to return. Over time, the relationship between the two species blossomed and became more than casual. Humans and dogs became friends.
The relationship between cats and humans did not develop until about 10,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent. It is probably accurate to say cats domesticated themselves. Humans did not seek them out, but as humans transitioned to agriculture, stored grain attracted rodents, which drew in the African wildcat. This mutually beneficial partnership eventually gave rise to the domestic cat.
Animals play an important role in the lives of humans. They have been our protectors, companions, benefactors, co-workers, and even best friends. Humans need animals in their lives to stay healthy mentally and even physically.
Most pet owners will admit to having a strong emotional bond with their pet, and scientific evidence confirms that when owners feel a strong emotional bond, their pets, especially dogs and cats, experience a genuine, reciprocal attachment. They view their human companions as a source of safety and security.
All but one of the photos above are from the 20th century. I have others from the 19th century in my family photo archive, but those were of poor quality, and I opted not to post them. Before photography, pets and their humans were often depicted together in paintings such as these.

Thank you! Very nice.
